LARGEST MIDWEST KITE FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ITS 27TH ANNIVERSARY
MACkite of Grand Haven is proud to announce that the Great Lakes Kite Festival is celebrating its 27th festival this year. The dates are May 16-17.
Being the largest kite festival in the Midwest, spectators come from near and far to enjoy the outdoor weekend. “The Grand Haven State Park campground fills up almost as soon as reservations are allowed to be made” says Negen. “We love it that people come every year. It’s great that they continue to enjoy the festival and bring their friends and families.”
The weekend always includes kites that are bigger than school buses, performances all day on Saturday and Sunday, and the Indoor Fly on Friday night. The biggest crowd pleasers are the performers. They fly routines as individuals or as teams, choreographed to music. “Think the Blue Angels set to music” says Negen.
Several performers have enjoyed participating in the event so much that they have been to every single one. Eric Wolff of Chicago and Lee Sedgwick of Erie, Pennsylvania make the trip to Grand Haven each year to demonstrate their kite skills for the crowds. Other kite aficionado’s design and sew their own kites and ground displays.
The Indoor Fly is awe inspiring simply due to the technical aspects of flying inside a gym. The participants do not use anything other than body movement to keep their kites aloft. They will also fly routines set to music using only ultralight kites designed for little or no wind.
Bring a beach chair, sunblock and a windbreaker jacket. It's a fabulous family event.
